Who is this for?

Those interested in History of Art or Fine Art wishing to expand their knowledge and critical techniques. 

Overview

Investigates the history of British 20th-century fine art, drawing examples from Southampton City Art Gallery’s extensive collection. Participants develop critical skills and relate these to their knowledge of British schools of art and movements. Emphasis is given to the direct study of artworks in gallery sessions.

Paintings, prints, drawings and sculpture are studied.

Delivery

Image-supported lectures introduce themes, including style and iconography, meaning and function.

They are supported by gallery sessions, where participants learn through direct observation, and presentations in seminars. 

Assessment

Assessment is through an exhibition proposal and review notes on exhibited works, reflecting awareness of themes and styles running across British 20th-century fine art. Formative assessment is carried out throughout.

Prerequisites: Should have an interest in and, ideally, some familiarity with the broad range of twentieth century British art. Formal qualifications in either the History of Art or Fine Art are not essential. Writing and verbal skills sufficient to articulate and record responses to artworks are necessary.
