Who is this for?

Those with a sound knowledge of English who would like to reach a level where they can confidently study for an English-taught higher education course, or work in an English-speaking environment.

Overview

Participants develop language skills - listening, speaking, reading and writing - in a wide range of practical contexts. They become adept in complex language skills, enabling them to write and speak effectively in personal and professional situations.

Using topics exploring English culture, participants revise basic grammatical structures and move on to more ambitious elements.

The course is offered under the University’s Curriculum Plus scheme at levels 0, 1, 2, and 3. A pass is equivalent to B2 in the Common European Framework of reference for levels of language proficiency, and an IELTS score of 6.

Delivery

Lecture-led interactive language classes use spoken and written teaching materials to explain key vocabulary and grammar structures. Learning is backed up by group and pair work.

Resources include language textbook, recorded materials, internet, audio and visual cassettes, online dictionary and the University’s multimedia system.

Assessment

Assessed through coursework, with three class tests, including simulation, vocational and comprehension exercises, and one speaking test as an individual conversation with the tutor.

There is ongoing formative assessment, including online self-study and testing activities.
