2012

Who is this for?

Those with an art/history background wishing to expand their knowledge and understanding of figurative art.

Overview

Examines the internal historical and narrative aspects of figurative art, where pictorial images represent real, mythical, or imagined events. It also looks at iconic and symbolic pictorial signs.

Psychoanalytical and more recent interpretative frameworks are introduced, and key concepts of contemporary critical analysis, such as the ‘male gaze’ are tested against a diverse range of examples, largely from Southampton City Art Gallery.

Delivery

Image analysis is carried out in small tutor-led groups, either in gallery sessions, or working from reproduced images projected onto screen for discussion. Participants are encouraged to develop iconographic awareness by seeking out and following pictorial/compositional conventions, and noting their spread and mutation from one artist and place to another over time.

Seminars provide opportunities for reflection and for shared learning.

Assessment

Assessment is through an in-class visual examination and a written report on a pictorial theme or visual trope observed in several art works. This is designed to assess the ability to ‘read’ an artwork through recognising iconographic and symbolic content, and using other pictorial evidence to access a narrative.
