Who is this for?
Those with access to resistance machines who would benefit from the knowledge and skills needed to prescribe safe and effective resistance machine exercises to improve clients’ health and fitness. This would benefit organisations with small gyms not requiring staff to go through a full fitness industry-accredited Gym Instructor qualification.
Overview
Through a tutor-led workshop, practical exercises and directed study, participants explore relevant theories of anatomy and physiology, and gain practical skills needed to be able to devise and deliver an appropriate resistance machine training session.
Areas covered include anatomy and physiology – neuromuscular system; basic kinesiology; teaching, communication and motivation skills; basic programme design; monitoring resistance machines exercise intensity; systems of training; programme variables; warm ups and cool downs.

Delivery
Learning is achieved through a tutor-led one-day workshop, self-directed study, blended learning and an assessment day.
The workshop consists of theoretical content and practical instruction in the use resistance machine exercises.
Participants apply their knowledge and skills to real-life clients in their own work environments over a 4-6 week period. They are required to have mentor support in their workplace.
The University’s virtual learning resource, myCourse, provides additional materials, discussion forums, interactive quizzes and revision aids, as well as online tutor support.
Assessment
Assessment is through a practical simulation and reflective journal, measuring competence in planning and delivering safe and effective resistance machine training sessions with clients in the workplace. Participants attend a practical assessment day to submit their planned aerobic training session with their chosen client.
Formative assessment takes place during the workshop and via interactive online quizzes.
