Those interested in cultural history wishing to expand their knowledge of Southampton City Art Gallery in its cultural context. 

Overview

Examines the Southampton City Art Gallery public collection, including phases of growth, and the factors that have encouraged or inhibited its development into a major regional collection of fine art.

The history of this gallery is contextualised through reference to national policies and wider social and economic changes that have affected public art collections through the twentieth century and into the twenty-first.

Teaching makes extensive use of the gallery’s collections and comparative assessment is enabled through the study of other public collections.

Delivery

Participants are given the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the collection to understand its formation and the task faced by the gallery in presenting its holdings to the public. Participants view artworks relative to each other and as elements of a collection.

Seminars underpin gallery sessions and private study, and provide an opportunity for lecturer-led discussions, where key decisions taken in the history of the gallery are debated. 

Assessment

Assessment is through a research folder drawing on specific knowledge of the Southampton City Art Gallery collection and looking at its cultural potential and achievement, in light of practical and financial constraints, and conflicting demands.

Prerequisites: An established interest in cultural history, ideally in the cultural history of Southampton and the region. Formal qualifications in History, Art History, or Fine Art would be advantageous but are not required.
