Course overview

Make-up-hair-design-for-music-film-photographyThis course specialises in teaching high level design skills which are applied to the construction of make up ideas, giving you the potential to rise to the top of this fast paced, design led industry.

You will be taught to understand how to research and concept makeup and hair styling ideas and to consider the constraints of working in lens based industries. You will work in a high specification, make up and hair design studio for practical make up workshops as well as have the opportunity to work on location.

Students will have the opportunity to gain practical skills in pre-production planning, script research and scheduling, scene story boarding, researching and presenting ideas, designing colour palettes, being camera ready, lighting techniques, photographic styling, image and celebrity.

Industry projects and client-based work will inform the link between innovation and industry requirements. Historical and contemporary contextual studies will inform and underpin the course.The curriculum will develop the technical, creative and business skills required in order to work in those industries within the context of styling, hair design and make up.

Assessment

Mix of live, practical and theoretical projects (individual and group), written assignments, case studies, presentations and portfolio projects.

Entry level

120 UCAS points from two 6-unit awards or equivalent, one of which must be in a relevant art and design discipline; or have undertaken a relevant Art and Design Foundation course.  

Applicants with a relevant NVQ Level 3 and Key Skills at Level 3 will be considered following an interview and portfolio viewing as appropriate. 

Qualifications equivalent to the above may also be considered; contact the Faculty Office for further information. 

Applicants will be invited to a portfolio viewing.

Special features

The main aim of this vocational course is to produce creative make up designers equipped with the skills to gain employment within the broad spectrum of TV, film, music and fashion industries. The course will provide practical opportunities and aid in the production of a professional portfolio, which will be particularly important for those graduates aiming to work as freelance practitioners or consultants.

Working in styling |Career areas could include the publishing, advertising, fashion, music, film and TV in roles such as Image Consultant, Stylist, Make up and Hair Designer, Features Editor/Copywriter, Photographer’s Assistant, and Creative Director.
