"I chose Solent University due to its location and the fact that it had accreditation with the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technology (CIAT). I enjoyed the course and especially liked the design projects. There was healthy competiveness by all the students in culminating the final year project which resulted in a very high standard of work.
"I have recently left full time employment to set up my own architectural practice. Prior to this I worked for a small architectural practice and gained experience. Working on smaller projects enabled me to gain all the necessary experience to complete the requirements for obtaining full membership of CIAT.
"I have also worked as a senior architectural technologist whilst I was an associate of a private practice. My role was to undertake the detail design of projects. This included planning and building regulations applications to full working drawings packages and specifications.
"I particularly enjoy the problem solving aspects involved in architectural projects. It is a very creative profession mixing design with the application of technology. It can be very satisfying to visit a site and see a project I have been involved with taking shape.
"My favourite project that I have worked on was an £8m redevelopment of a large private coastal estate in Jersey. The work involved a major renovation and new build, including two new swimming pools, a gymnasium, rebuilding the main house and alterations/refurbishment to the estate cottages.
"Completing my degree at Solent University has enabled me to progress to becoming a Chartered member of the CIAT.
"My advice to anyone entering this profession would be to try and gain as much work experience as possible. Architecture involves a wide variety of subject matter both practical and academic. Completing the degree not only gives you a great foundation from which to build on, it will improve confidence and shows future employers you are committed."
