Course overview

This is a well-established and highly regarded course and offers students a broad-based business course whilst allowing specialisation in Management.

The HND Business and Management degree at Southampton Solent University allows you to enhance existing skills that you may have as well developing new skills in a range of areas within a business environment, whilst specialising in Management. You will develop skills, techniques, personal qualities and attitudes for effective performance at work.

The course has been designed to offer students flexible teaching and learning within the field of business whilst recognising the changing nature of the business environment and equipping students with the necessary core skills.

Members of the business community, as well as our own students have had significant input in the development of this innovative, flexible and broad-based HND.

Through our experienced lecturers you will gain a wide view of business and management, as well as being offered options in different areas.

Like many of our students, you can progress from the HND to either a BA (Hons) degree – possibly directly into the second year – or a BA(Hons) Business Top-Up programme, with a Merit profile at Level 5, or go on to study for qualifications with a professional body. Elements of the HND may be accepted elsewhere for partial professional accreditation exemption under the CATS scheme.

Course content

Year 4 will consist of six units that offer you a broad coverage of business issues and topics, as well as offering you a wide variety of assessment methods. All students, HND Business and Management or HND Business and Marketing will take the same units in the first year and will specialise in the second year (level 5) of their study.

A carefully selected mix of assignments, presentations, in-class tests (coursework) and examinations.

Projects/work experience

All students will have to complete a Business Consultancy project at level 5. The aim of this unit is allow students the opportunity to identify business problems and through research find practical solutions to business problems.

The use of business simulation software will help students understand how changes in policy/strategy, at all levels of the business, affect business performance and profits.
