When looking for a degree course Alex wanted somewhere that offered a work placement and wasn't too far away from home. He chose Southampton Solent University as they were one of the very few institutions that offered this in at the time, and the location was perfect. “The Business Studies degree and the work placement at GM Motors, New York, helped me learn how to research and analyze subjects.” He advises. “Plus, I had a fantastic time!”

Alex is currently employed as a Public Relations Executive for Skandia UK, based in Southampton. “I manage external communications for the various Skandia companies in the UK,” he explains. “This includes UK group companies operating in the rest of the world. I also work with Skandia's sponsorship activity - predominately sailing-based - and concentrating on the world-famous Skandia Cowes Week, the largest and oldest sailing regatta.”

Alex says, "I developed a keen interest in public relations while working with GM Motors in New York on the work placement. Southampton Solent University put me ahead of the competition by giving me the opportunity to spend a year in industry. I was able to find the career of my choice shortly after graduation.

"I strongly advocate going on a work placement scheme while doing your degree."
