2012
This year students from the Tourism, Cruise and Events degrees were given the chance to gain work experience at the “UK Cruise Convention 2010”, held in the busy port of Southampton. Attended by industry delegates from all over the world, the event celebrated the future of the cruise industry and featured a number of super liners including the Eclipse, the Azura and Queen Mary Two.
Patsy Morgan, Senior Lecturer in Cruise Tourism at Southampton Solent University said of the event:
“The Southampton Cruise Convention, attended by over 700 delegates gave students a unique opportunity to work at an event dedicated to the cruise industry. Students were able to gain firsthand experience showing their initiative, working with a range of people for many areas within the industry and applying skills obtained whilst studying on the degree. This has given students and insight into the 'real world' of cruise, tourism and events management.”
Student Views of the ICC
“(At the International Cruise Convention) I had the opportunity to see what happens behind the scenes at a major event like this. I now understand how important every single person is and how success depends vitally on team work. I have gained so much knowledge about the events and cruise industries that will really help me in my future goal of working on board cruise ships.” Zigamantas Jankauskas
“I am so glad to have taken part at the International Cruise Convention and really hope I have the chance to help at more events like it to benefit my future. I now feel greatly motivated in my studies and excited about the career opportunities that are available to me in the tourism industry. I spoke to many important people in various tourism sectors who gave me ideas as to where I could go with my degree knowledge once I’ve completed my course.” Leanne Daniels
