"I wanted a course that offered the ‘whole package’ and felt that Solent really did. I was already working for Southampton Football Club and wanted a course that supplemented my work experience. The diverse and varied subject matter was a real strong point, not to mention the chance to learn a wide range of skills like IT, time management and presentation.
"Upon completing my course, I decided to leave Southampton FC. The former academy coach was at Fulham – I had introduced myself to him several times when he had lectured at Solent, keeping him aware of my progress – so I sent him my CV. He forwarded it on to the coaching staff, who offered me a job after my first practical interview.
"I coach the under-9s to under-14s: the next generation of footballing talent. Though I adhere to set syllabus formulated by Fulham FC, I love being able to impart the knowledge I’ve gained through my academic studies and work experiences. Seeing the youngsters develop as players and people is very satisfying.
"I am lucky enough to be going to South Africa to help tutor local coaches, and was recently selected to assist an international skills programme in Malaysia, during which we spent three days giving practical coaching and lectures to coaches from all over the country.
"My advice to anyone looking to get into the football industry would be to gain experience, a good set of contacts, a progressive CV and a strong degree score. All of these are needed to stand out to employers. Plus, it’s important to pursue all avenues available. I believe the skills you gain at university put you above someone who didn't go. Sometimes the work load was challenging, but getting through it means nothing fazes me now."
