Election night 2010

2012

Students from Southampton Solent University's BA (Hons) Journalism degree worked through the night on Thursday to help the Daily Echo report the General Election in print and online.

Level 2 and 3 students joined Echo reporters at the counts in Southampton, Eastleigh, Romsey and Gosport to produce words, pictures and video reports, while others supported the Echo's news room team pulling it all together at their Redbridge HQ until well past dawn on Friday.

Journalism lecturers Andy Chatfield, Martin Buckley and Rick Martin supported the students on location.

Andy said: "This was a fantastic opportunity for our students to help report on the biggest of breaking news stories and they rose to the challenge superbly. It was wonderful to see them put the skills learned in the classroom into effect with such professionalism and passion. I would also like to thank Echo editor Ian Murray for embracing this linkup so wholeheartedly. The BA (Hons) Journalism course has had close ties with the Echo for many years and this has strengthened that valuable bond even more."

The students involved were: Virginia Brown, Yasmin Brown, Joe Burrows, Richard Canham, Rannva Danielsen, Piers D'Orgee, Matt Lanyon, Camille Lepage, Rachel Lovett, Ben Shelley, James Waldron and Dan Windle.
