Course overview  

The HNC Manufacturing and Mechanical Engineering course at Southampton Solent University is a nationally recognised qualification which will equip you for a role within modern manufacturing and mechanical engineering systems.  

Highly regarded by local employers, this vocational qualification will offer you a broad understanding of the typical tasks and requirements of engineering professionals.

EngineeringAlongside the sound engineering concepts you'll learn, you'll be introduced to engineering applications, analogue and digital electronics, and mathematics.  

Through a range of lab work and hands-on projects, you'll also be able to explore aspects of manufacturing, mechanical principles and materials. Your 'learning by doing' helps to maintain our high success rate for student employability, and will complement your ability to evaluate solutions to a range of engineering problems using developed technology.

This HNC provides an academic platform to enter a number of post HNC courses, such as a HND, Foundation Degree, or an Honours degree, which allows you to work towards the professional status of Incorprated Engineer.

Assessment  

Assessment is carried out by a variety of methods, dependant on the particular unit of study. Methods of assessment include in-course assignments, laboratory work, formal examinations and projects.    

Special features  

Once you've successfully completed this HNC you may continue your learning by doing another year of study to achieve a HND or Foundation Degree (FdSc). Further study on the BSc (Hons) Manufacturing and Mechanical Engineering is then possible.  

You can also apply to transfer to the parallel Foundation Degree at the end of Year 1. Your final decision on the course and subject choice can be left until the start of the second period.

You'll have exclusive access to the Maritime and Technology Faculty's own network of approx. 100 fully networked desktop PCs, in addition to the University's general network of around 600 PCs and 100 Apple Macs.  

All these machines are equipped with a wide range of industry standard applications, programming languages and system development tools, and offer free e-mail and Internet access. Laptop hire is also available.  

Fees 

Fees for the 2011/12 academic year are:
£1,375 pa for UK and EU students or £565 per 20 point unit. Overseas students please contact the faculty for details of fees. Students also pay an Edexcel Registration fee, contact the faculty office for details.
