As students are normally in full time employment the degree offers them the opportunity to underpin their work experiences with sound theoretical principles. Our experience over the last ten years has shown significant career progression for completing students.
Recent graduates from this Mechanical Design degree have found responsible positions in a wide cross-section of industry, such as a research and development manager (prototype aircraft development), design engineer (aerospace industries), design and test manager (mechanical instruments) and a machine tool manager (sub-contract machining).
Course overview
On the BEng(Hons) Mechanical Design degree (Part Time) at Southampton Solent University you'll not only prepare for a role as a technically competent engineer, you'll also graduate with a strong awareness of the business environment. The aim of the course is to give you the knowledge and skills to be an employable engineer taking a multidisciplinary approach to work. The course has developed very strong links with a wide range of industries thus ensuring the currency of the course content.
Highly focused, you'll be taken through key principles in mechanical design and electronic engineering through a blend of hands-on and theoretical exercises.
You'll work on your own projects as well as in groups, exploring mechanical systems in themes like Computer Aided Design, Applied Mechanics, Design Studies – Interface (ergonomics) and Strength of Materials.
Balanced by your solid foundation in mathematics, you'll also be able to explore the rigorous areas of Strength of Materials and Analysis of Materials.
This forward thinking degree ensures you're equipped for industry. With elements of business strategy and marketing, you'll also be able to add theory and application of project management to your skillset. Your industry-based final project will also give you the chance to demonstrate your sound understanding of the engineering design process.
To give your employability a further boost, you might choose to take the Manufacturing Strategy and Design option where you will carry out a group company based improvement project. We also offer a vibrant option unit in entrepreneurship, which is useful if you envisage starting your own business.
This Mechanical Design degree, delivered by experienced, approachable staff, has gained a strong track record for graduate success. Many of our students have gained responsible industrial positions spanning a wide section of industry.

You'll also undertake a major project in the field of mechanical design, which may be developed in partnership with an industrial company.
Assessment
Your progress is determined through continual assessments, using coursework, projects and end-of-year exams. The balance varies at different levels of the course but in general, written examinations count for about 50%.
Fees
Fees for the 2011/12 academic year are:
£1,690 pa or £565 per 20 points unit for UK and EU students. Overseas students please contact the faculty for details of fees.
