Course overview
The outdoor and waterbased leisure industry is vast and still growing area. The industry sectors range from activity providers in the UK and overseas focusing on holidays or education, to support services (such as marinas, equipment servicing or representative bodies) and equipment suppliers and retailers.
Southampton Solent University has been at the forefront of education at degree and HND level in this area for many years and is always developing its courses through close liaison with industry.
The staff team are involved in a range of research and consultancy work with organisations such as the RYA, Neilson, Sunsail, Sport England, Amateur Rowing Association, Hampshire County Council which then underpins their teaching.
The degree courses, BA (Hons) Outdoor Adventure Management and BA (Hons) Watersports Studies and Management are run as a programme with common areas of study in three areas. These are the nature, supply and demand issues of the industry, management studies, that are contexualised through relevant examples, and key skills. Each course then has its own specialist areas relevant to its expected outcomes. The HND and Foundation degree courses study similar areas and concentrate on the operational activity of the industry.

Practical activity: The course includes practical watersports activity within core units at all levels. Students will undertake a programme that supports the theoretical aspects of the units and also normally leads towards a national governing body qualification. The time spent on these practicals within the course is equivalent to approximately 5 full days during the year. The range of activities offered each year are dependent upon a number of factors but would generally include dinghy sailing, keelboat sailing, powerboating and kayaking from beginner to instructor levels, other activities such as windsurfing and scuba diving may also be offered at specific levels.
In addition to these opportunities within the course, students will be able to undertake a range of courses at the University RYA training Centre at our Warsash Campus and join the wide range of sports clubs available at the university, which include watersports clubs, or make the most of the vast opportunities for watersports participation in and around the Southampton area.
Assessment
The course is assessed primarily using a number of in-course assignments including essays, reports and oral presentations. Additionally students have to complete a limited number of end-of-year examinations.

220 points of which 120 are from one 12-unit or two 6-unit awards.

AS awards will be considered towards the total required if in subjects other than those taken to the higher level.
Note: All successful applicants will be required to undertake a criminal record check processed through the Criminal Records Bureau. The existence of any past offences should be declared in the application process. As part of some courses, you will be required to undertake work with community groups and assessments will follow this work. A criminal record is not necessarily a bar to undertaking a course but, dependent upon the course, offences may lead to you not being enrolled or being required to withdraw from the course.
Career opportunities
The course has been designed to equip students with the foundation skills for a career in the outdoor industry.
Careers being followed by graduates include Activity Centre Managers, Youth Workers, Teachers, Yachting school director, and Health workers.
