Neil Gibbs
BA (Hons) Performance
Since graduating with first class honours in 2007 Neil has been a prominent presence in the performance sector in and around Southampton. He has been teaching numerous drama classes at schools, colleges and drama groups that he has organised.
From September 2008 Neil became the creative director of The Gantry Youth Theatre. He has since produced, written and directed numerous productions, including its pantomime production of Aladdin, which was performed in Southampton Solent University's own performing space.
In 2006, whilst studying, Neil co-founded the production company Rear View Mirror Ltd. The company performed for two summers at Marwell Zoological Park in Winchester, attracting more than 50,000 people to watch its shows during that time. They created six original shows to entertain and educate the audience. "It was a fantastic experience" said Neil. "The tutors were a great help with their extensive knowledge of performing. Every actor had to play multiple roles; I would play a snake in one show and a horrible hunter the next! Without the grounding of the course and the support of the lecturers we would not have been able to produce such creative and high quality work."
The degree mixes theory with practice, which Neil considers to be key to his success: "The theory side of the course underpinned the practical aspects that we were learning and allowed us to experiment with different approaches to performing. Every script I look at I try to put into contexts to provide something real to draw upon. It has also helped my writing by providing me with the tools to structure a script."
Neil is currently working on a number of writing projects for his drama group and his own performances. "I would recommend the course to anyone that is looking to explore all areas of performance and anyone looking to take advantage of the fantastic opportunities that the degree has to offer."
