Student Profile Lucyna Wajdzik
“My native language is Polish and have been learning English since I was at school, as well as studying Russian for three years.
“I had a little bit of experience of German, however that was 10 years ago and only for 1 year. When I saw an opportunity to learn it again, I signed up for Introductory German.
“Our tutors use a range of equipment in classes such as video, CD players, and the Internet to support our learning, in addition to the books and dictionaries in the Library, which were very helpful during exams. It was also great to be able to listen to a native speaker, which I had not experienced in German before.
“In my opinion all areas of study are equally important at the introductory stage, however I found learning the numbers and having conversations most useful.
“Learning another language is valuable in widening my employment opportunities, but also helps with communication between people from other cultures. I have just come back from holiday in Morocco where people spoke Arabic, French and Spanish instead of English. It made me realise how important and how much easier it would be if I knew more languages: its polite to know at least a little bit of the native language in the country you are in!”
