Student Profile Peter Rosselli
“I was aware that the option to study another language existed but I initially didn’t look further in to it during my first year at university. It wasn’t until my second year that I started learning Italian as an extra to my full time Advertising course.
“The Italian course is really well taught by an especially helpful and approachable tutor. Clear explanations at a steady pace made the task of learning a language far less intimidating than originally thought. By having an additional hour on grammar for beginners, you’re able to develop the foundations required to further your understanding and grasp of what is essentially a new language.
“I really enjoyed learning a new language. I really liked how it broadens your horizons in terms of culture, particularly when the tutor is always willing to share his knowledge about the respective country and the origins of the words.
“The facilities at Southampton Solent University are great for those who want to learn a language. The language centre provides published articles in whichever language the University covers as well as the opportunity to watch TV channels from the respective countries. There are almost too many resources and not enough time to make full use of them.
“People will naturally assume learning a new language on top of doing a course is too much to take on. However the reality is far different. With the help and support of the tutors at the University as well as all the resources there are on offer, fitting in a language alongside an undergraduate course is a great deal more achievable than most would think.
“Learning another language is hugely important in today’s world. Many more opportunities are available just by having the ability to converse or at least understand another language. From a personal perspective, I wanted to learn Italian so I could communicate with my family more effectively. By making the effort to learn Italian the family now treat me like a king whenever I visit!
“I’m so pleased I decided to learn a new language whilst studying at Solent. The only regret I have is waiting until my second year to start!”
