“I have always had an interest in tourism but also felt that I wanted to succeed in business. My BA (Hons) Tourism Management course combines the two elements. At Southampton Solent University I am able to learn about the tourism industry as well as study the business aspects. The course provides a strong foundation for my career.
“My interest in tourism began while growing up in pubs in my early teens. This lifestyle gave me a great interest in the hospitality industry and inspired me to pursue tourism management. I have worked in various tourist-related jobs, such as tourist information centres, summer season work in Cornwall and corporate hospitality, all of which led me to my course at the University. My employment fuelled my interest in tourism and business, but it is at Southampton Solent that I have obtained the knowledge to succeed in a tourism career. I have gained confidence and adapted key skills such as communication and team building, through various presentations and course studies.
“There are also opportunities to enjoy optional overseas field trips: my course mates travelled to Gambia and learned about its culture. The students had a brilliant time!
“The modern University offers all facilities, amenities and resources to ensure that I can work effectively on my assignments. Since arriving at Southampton Solent, I have made many friends including international students. It’s a great environment with friendly staff and helpful tutors.
“My overall objective is to gain a successful career in tourism management and I believe this course is a big step towards achieving my goals.”
