2012

I spent a long time looking into various courses before settling on Writing Fashion and Culture at Southampton Solent University.

What sets it apart from similar degrees is that it combines both fashion and media, in a way that is both innovative and exciting.

After academic based A-levels, I completed an Art and Design Foundation course at Chichester College with the intention of going down the textiles and design route.

However, although I enjoyed being artistic and had a keen interest in the fashion industry, I felt the design field alone wasn't right for me. Writing Fashion and Culture combined both creative and academic studies in a way that was unlike any other course.

Not only has the course equipped me with practical, transferable industry skills but it has provided theoretical knowledge of fashion and culture, which has helped me to understand the fashion industry in its broader context.

The staff are supportive and helpful and encourage us to get as much industry experience as possible. I have personally found this to be a great way to build on existing skills and gain valuable contacts.

My first placement was at The Daily Echo in Southampton, where I got to see first hand what goes on behind the scenes of a local newspaper. I worked closely alongside the features team helping them with research, interviews and writing articles and even got to see some of my work in print, which was very rewarding.

In my second year I carried out a two week placement at New Women and FHM. This gave me a taste of the busy pace of London life and a glimpse of the thriving environment of a magazine office. Work experience has helped me to develop and mature as a writer and journalist, leaving me with more confidence and a better knowledge of the professions I may well go into.

As the course has progressed we have been able to select options that reflect both our personal strengths and interests with pathways such as photography, PR or styling.

I have really appreciated the variety and flexibility of the course; it's a great way to help individuals decide what part of the creative industry suits them best.

As for career plans I'm keeping an open mind at the moment; there are so many things I would like to accomplish. I would definitely like to gain more work experience in the media, hopefully in the fashion department of a magazine or as a styling assistant.
