Historic architecture and intimate scenic studies from in and around Southampton are celebrated in ‘A Point of view: A Solo Exhibition’ at Southampton Solent University.
Artist and Solent University lecturer, Peter Jarvis, has taken a keen interest in buildings and landscape since writing his dissertation on JMW Turner at Ravensbourne College of Art in the early ‘70s.
Peter's latest exhibition - featuring historic sites from Southampton and the surrounding area - melds together his love of architecture and the more secret and hidden corners of the urban landscape.
Influenced by the many artists of the Romantic Period, including John Sell Cotman and Thomas Girtin, Peter says: “Hampshire has an abundance of fascinating architecture that goes back centuries. I’m drawn to quiet, out of sight areas and the old town of the city.
One of Peter’s favourite images from his new exhibition is ‘Wreck on the River Itchen’, which was the result of his interest in weathered and decaying subject matter.
“I find the mix of industry and nature around the docks and the waterfront fascinating subject matter. It’s such a shame that so many of these areas are not open to the public.”
Peter – a highly regarded watercolour painter -i s a Fellow and the Education Officer for the Society of Architectural Illustration, (SAI). He has lectured at Southampton Solent University for the past 20 years and teaches on the BA(Hons) Interior Design (Decoration) course.
The exhibition will be running at Southampton Solent University’s Michael Andrews Concourse Gallery, East Park Terrace, SO14 0YN from 27 October 2011 to 7 January 2012.
