Southampton Solent University celebrated the opening of ‘Solent Showcase’ its brand new gallery and exhibition space in the University’s Sir James Matthews Building in the city centre.Richard DEMARCO

The venue is the first major addition to Southampton’s emerging cultural quarter and was officially opened by the University’s Chancellor, Admiral The Right Honourable Lord West of Spithead on Thursday 24 November at an exciting evening event. 

The opening enabled attendees to view an inaugural exhibition drawn from the extensive archive of Professor Richard Demarco featuring works by Joseph Beuys, Paul Neagu, Ian Hamilton Finlay as well as other artists of international repute. The award-winning Yvette Bozsik Dance Company from Budapest provided an intimate performance at the event entitled 'Miss Julie'.

Yvette Bozsik Dance CompanySolent Showcase was opened during the University’s Graduation Week celebrations and coincides with the expansion of art courses and the development of a new space for The Solent School of Art and Design close to The Bargate in the city.

Going forward, Solent Showcase will feature contemporary visual art that encourages engagement, discussion and participation with the whole community. Up and coming national and international artists will be supported by the venue to provide examples of contemporary art to inspire students and a wider audience.
