Name: ‘Speak Up: Speak Out’: Southampton’s Holocaust and Genocide Memorial Day 2012
Date: Thursday 26 January 2012
Time: 6-7pm
Location: Sir James Matthews Building, Southampton Solent University, Above Bar
Southampton will be marking the UK’s national Holocaust and Genocide Memorial Day with a commemorative event on Thursday 26 January supported by and held at Southampton Solent University.
The Memorial Day is dedicated to the remembrance of victims who were persecuted as a result of genocide and discusses the discriminatory issues which society faces today.
The free event, organised in conjunction with Southampton Solent University, The Parkes Institute, University of Southampton and Itchen College, will feature music, slides and performances. Students from Itchen College will also reflect on Holocaust testimony.
There will be a special recital from BA (Hons) Performance degree students who will present a short piece entitled "Everything is a Present", from the reflections of the inspiring Alice Sommer Herz, a survivor of the Terezin concentration camp.
The Welcome speeches will be delivered by Phil Gibson, Solent’s Head of Student Services and Reverend Steve Hall, University Chaplin, followed by Jenny Cuffe speaking on asylum and immigration and The Multi-Agency Group on racial harassment. Guests will receive Holocaust Memorial Day Trust literature and will get the opportunity to talk with speakers throughout the evening before receiving a memorial candle.
