Pre-sessional English Programme 2012
Course overview
Our pre-sessional summer English programme is designed for students from around the world who need to improve their level of English before starting their degree at Southampton Solent University.
Students have 18 hours in class per week, as well as opportunities for activities and visits.

Course outcomes
The programme aims to help you improve your score in IELTS (International English Language Testing System) or equivalent. This means that if you complete the programme successfully, you will find that you have improved your ability to use English in the context of your chosen course of study, with better skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing. You will also be familiar with the main features of the British system of higher education.
Assessment
To complete this course successfully, you will have to show that you can achieve a satisfactory level in a variety of different exercises and tasks, some done outside class, and some done in class under test conditions. Full details will be given on arrival.
Six-week course: 23 July-31 August 2012
This programme aims to improve your IELTS score by 0.5; from either 5.5-6.0; or 6.0-6.5 in preparation for study at undergraduate or postgraduate level.
Course fee: £1,320
12-week course: 11 June-31 August 2012
This programme aims to improve your IELTS score by 1.0 - from 5.0 to 6.0, or 5.5 to 6.5 - in preparation for study at undergraduate or postgraduate level.

Course content
Applied English- Practise all four main language skill areas, using authentic materials on a range of different themes. Classes will focus on general and specialist topics useful for later study, including grammar workshops.
Academic English – Develop your formal English writing skills, learn how to compose essays, gain techniques for effective study, and discover how to collect information and use it correctly.
English for IELTS - Gain the skills you need for success in the IELTS exams.
Background to Britain – Find out about life as a student in Southampton, get to know more about the UK, and explore current issues in Britain.
Entry level
If you have not taken an IELTS test, and have a different qualification in English, we will be happy to advise whether the course is suitable for you.

The University’s Language Centre provides a wide range of dedicated facilities:

In support of the English programme a variety of activities and excursions may be arranged so you can visit the local area and some major cities.
