Incoming students
We welcome over 100 incoming exchange students every year. Students come from our partner institutions under the Erasmus Programme. This is a Programme which has the support of the Commission of the European Communities within the framework of the Lifelong Learning Programme.
We also have incoming exchange students from our partner institutions in North America.
Students are also welcome to apply on fee-paying study abroad/visiting student basis.
How to Apply
Please contact us by email on international.exchanges@solent.ac.uk| or download a copy of our application form for incoming exchange and visiting students and the notes on how to complete it.

Application form guidance note|
Once you have completed the form, you must get it signed by your home university to ensure that your application is approved. Please include a copy of your transcript (a list of the subjects you have studied so far) with your completed application as it helps academic staff to advise you on choosing a suitable programme of study.
We do not have a fixed deadline for receipt of applications but we strongly recommend that we receive applications for Semester 1 and full year exchanges by the end of May and by about mid-November for Semester 2 exchanges.
Once your application has been approved, you will receive a formal offer letter stating that you have been accepted as an exchange student at Southampton. Please do not lose this letter as it is proof of your status as an exchange student. You will also receive the Pre-arrival Handbook and any other information on living and studying in Southampton.
Courses
In order for your studies here to be recognised by your home institution, you need to complete a learning agreement, which states the subjects (units) you will be studying at Southampton. If you study at Southampton Solent University for a full academic year, you are required to study units totalling 60 ECTS (120 of our credits). If you are here for one period, you must study units worth a total of 30 ECTS (60 of our credits). You may also take a Language as a supplementary unit. It is your responsibility to ensure that when you have chosen your units and completed your learning agreement, it is signed off so that your curriculum is recorded.
Languages
We offer courses (units) in English as a Foreign Language at different levels which are free of charge to exchange and visiting students. Units cover written and oral work and there are also units on cultural, social and political issues. Some English classes concentrate on Business and Academic English. In addition, we offer units in French, German, Spanish and Italian at different levels, ranging from beginner to advanced. It may be possible to study Chinese at beginners' level. All international students receive advice on language study when they arrive in September. You will then be able to enrol for language units.
