Do I need a visa and an ATAS certificate?

Nationals of the European Union and European Economic Area (EEA) may enter the UK by producing a valid passport or national idendity card, and are able to study withouth restriction. Non-EU and non-EEA nationals will need to apply for a visa.

If you will be studying a postgraduate subject in the area of science, computing or technology you may have to apply to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office for Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) clearance before you apply for a visa to come to the UK or apply to extend your UK visa.

How do I apply for a visa?

Visas can be obtained from the UK Border Agency|. Their website will  help you find the office for your country that will handle your application. You must apply for your visa in the country of which you are a national or where you legally live. You can apply by post, in person or online.

What do I need when applying for a visa?

In order to make an entry clearing application at a British Embassy or Consulate, you will need to present a number of documents.

Do you have official representatives in my country who can help me?

How can I extend my visa?

It is important that you check the period of leave you have been granted. If you need to extend your permission to stay, you will need to submit your application before the date your visa expires.

Do I need to register with the police?

Students (except those from Commonwealth or EEA countries, USA and Japan) who intend to stay in the UK for longer than six months are required to register with the Police upon arrival.

Can I bring my family?

You can bring your family with you to the UK. However you should think carefully before deciding to bring them with you as there are financial and emotional factors to consider.

Can I travel to other countries?

Whilst studying in Southampton many students wish to travel to other countries for recreational or study-related trips. You should check with the Embassy/Consulate of the country you wish to visit whether someone of your nationality requires a visa to travel there.
