Can I work while I study?

If you are an EEA or Swiss national, or the dependant of one, you are permitted to work in the UK without any restrictions on the number of hours or type of work (except Bulgarian and Romanian students).

If you are a student from outside the EEA, you may work in the UK provided that your visa or passport is not stamped with a prohibition.

How many hours a week can I work?

There are no restrictions to work in the UK if you are an EEA or Swiss national (except students from Bulgaria or Romania).

Students from outside the EEA will be restricted to 20 hours per week during term time (except where UKBA prohibitions apply). 

How easy is it to find a part-time job in Southampton?

Once enrolled at the University, students will be able to register with the university's jobshop if they wish, where jobs are advertised internally and externally.

A majority of international students tend to apply directly to restaurants/bars/hotels/high street retailers, etc.

How much would I earn?

Wages will vary accordingly from one place to another. Students working via the University's jobshop will benefit from a minimum wage, currently at approximately £6.25 per hour.

Will I need an National Insurance number if I work part-time?

Yes it is a requirement once you start a job in order to register your NI contributions.

Can I work after I graduate?

International students from outside the EEA cannot work full-time on a student visa. There are a number of schemes which allow international students to stay on and work after their studies.
