The social life
Wherever you live in Southampton, whatever you study at our university, you will make friends from your first day of arrival and you will not find the time to get bored. The city is very student oriented, with more than 30,000 students studying at its two universities. For your entertainment, you can pick from a large number of restaurants, cinemas, theatres, clubs and bars, all within walking distance of the student residences and the main campus. The impressive West Quay centre should accommodate all your shopping needs, with almost 100 top brand stores. The city boasts two further city-centre malls and is home to a wide variety of independent and specialist shops. 2009 witnessed the opening in the centre of Southampton of the global IKEA furniture retailer, ideal for students. A wide range of sporting and leisure activities is available, with Southampton able to boast soccer at the St Mary's Stadium, country and test match cricket at the Rose Bowl, and regular hosting of major yacht and powerboat events.
