Millais Off-Site Projects presents

Channel

29 October 2009 - 30 January 2010

Foyer of the Sir James Matthews Building, Southampton Solent University, 157 – 187 Above Bar Street, Southampton, SO14 7NN

Andrew Cross, Susan Collins, Laura Ball, Julian Germain, Dominique Rey, Peter Collis and Rosie Maguire.

Boat on the ChannelAs one of the most powerful animators of British identity, the English Channel has inspired poetry and song for centuries. The exhibition looks at some of the recent visual representations of this symbolic stretch of water. The different perspectives generated by living artists are not those of the wars that have been fought on the sea and in the air over the Channel: they are a cooler examination of the effect of the Channel and its presence. The other meaning of the word ‘channel’ also comes into play in this exhibition – a channel of water (like Southampton Water itself) often connects us to nature and to other communities, either in the past or in the future.

Future Projects

The Millais Gallery (in its present form on East Park Terrace) has closed. The Millais Gallery team is now called Millais Off-Site Projects and is working in partnership with other agencies throughout the city, continuing the University’s commitment to accessible art and supporting and promoting emerging artists by staging exhibitions and events throughout public spaces across the University campus and other spaces in the city.
