News release - Art of our time
September 30 2008
Southampton Solent University's Millais Gallery is displaying a home grown visual feast this autumn, as it celebrates the 10th anniversary of the formal launch of the University's Art Collection.
The exhibition – that also marks 150 years of the Art College of Southampton – is devoted to the work of students, staff and a selection of local and visiting artists including Piranesi, Peter Blake and Maggie Hambling.
Ron McCormick, the collection's Curator said "In just a short time the collection – characterised by its superb craftsmanship, vision and humour – has become a significant feature of the University's cultural landscape, attracting favourable comments from students, staff and visitors alike."
The collection – which now holds more than 530 pieces of art – was established 1998 to celebrate the formal dedication of the Sir Michael Andrews Building by HRH the Princess Royal. Since then the collection has grown and includes an impressive range of works by Solent students, lecturing staff and local artists.
Regularly rotated throughout the University, the collection not only supports teaching and research in the visual arts but also enhances the visual environment of the campus.
