'The Beggars Opera' opens at SSU

24 January 2008

It will be a double celebration at Southampton Solent University on February 1 2008 when the curtain goes up on the first all student production to be performed in its brand new performance space at the John Everett Millais Building on Southampton Solent University's main campus, East Park Terrace, Southampton.

Third year performance student Eloise Oliver, directs the student cast in John Gay's The Beggars Opera.

Written in 1728, John Gay's great comic masterpiece is generally agreed to be the first ever musical. This savagely funny satire on marriage, money and morals is as relevant and biting today as it was when first written.

Eloise said:

"The show is set in Newgate Prison in the 1740's and boasts a cast of 25 and three musicians playing thieves, prostitutes, vagabonds, and crook.   It is really important to me as it is my first full length show as a director."

The show runs from 31 January – 2 February with evening performances at 7pm and an additional matinee at 4.30pm on Saturday 2 February.

Tickets will be on sale on the night in the John Everett Millais Building Foyer - £5.00 and £3.00 (concessions).
