16 January 2008

'Remember, Reflect, React'

Southampton will be marking the UK's eighth national Holocaust Memorial Day with a commemorative event on Saturday January 26 from 6-7pm at Southampton Solent University. The event will be hosted by Southampton's Holocaust and Genocide Memorial Day Planning Committee, who have joined forces with Southampton Solent University and Southampton University's Parkes Institute.

Holocaust Memorial Day is dedicated to the remembrance of victims who perished as a result of the genocide of the Second World War. The chosen date is the anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp.

All are welcome to attend the event which takes place at the Sir James Matthews Building, Solent University, Above Bar. For further information please contact Andy Marshall, Senior Chaplain, Southampton Solent University. Tel: 023 8031 9819, email: andy.marshall@solent.ac.uk||

Andy Marshall, Southampton Solent University Senior Chaplain, says:

"The event is an opportunity for us to remember all those who are victims of Genocide, not just victims from World War II. The benefit of commemorating this event is that it gives us an opportunity to share with others and to be reminded that we all need to be a part of preventing this in the future – whether that be on a small or a large scale."

Local school children and students will read extracts from the experiences of both Jewish victims of Nazi persecution and contemporary refugees from other genocides. The event will also feature music and a short film.
