Iwan Thomas asks students for help
Southampton Solent University health and fitness students are joining forces with Olympic athlete Iwan Thomas on a ground-breaking project to lift the health of the city.
Kids in Southampton's most deprived areas will benefit from students' specially developed fitness programmes and assessments, healthy eating advice and an information-website, as part of Iwan's Sprint Start programme.
Sprint Start – an awareness raising campaign to get kids into a healthier lifestyle through exercise and nutrition – is one of four local health and wellbeing projects being supported by the University's Community and Enterprise Office, which was awarded £300,000 from the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) to support the development of Southampton based sustainable social enterprises".
Iwan and his team gave a talk to Southampton Solent University health and fitness students on Monday, 31 March to discuss the programme. Students chosen to be part of the programme will get a unique opportunity to work with Iwan and professionals within the health and fitness industry.
Southampton Solent University's Community Projects Manager, Anne Carty said:
"This is an exciting opportunity for the University's staff and students to work in collaboration with a number of key agencies, community groups, local government and businesses across the City, to exchange knowledge and experience, and to make a real difference to the health, education and economic development of deprived communities in Southampton."
