Sponsorship launch for youngest yachtswoman transatlantic race

 15 September 2008

Katie and Van  Katie Miller, one of the UK's freshest solo sailing talents, launched her new sponsorship deal with Southampton Solent University at this year's PSP Southampton Boat Show.

Katie, 21, won the bluQube 1000 solo race in July 2008 and is about to embark on her next adventure as the youngest ever female entrant in the 2009 OSTAR race.  Sponsorship from Southampton Solent University will allow her to get her boat, "Hot Socks", in ship shape condition.

The 2006 Raymarine YJA Young Sailor of the Year – an official Boat Show ambassador – announced the partnership on Monday, September 15.

Katie - a final-year Yacht Production and Surveying student at Southampton Solent University - said: "I am ecstatic that Southampton Solent University has come onboard as sponsors. It is fantastic that they have chosen to support one of their own, and with their support we can take this campaign to the next level."

Southampton Solent University's Vice Chancellor, Professor Van Gore - speaking at the launch - congratulated the young yachtswoman on her latest achievements.  He said: "Southampton Solent University has a strong affiliation with sailing and we are always keen to see our students do well. We think she is terrific.

"Katie's achievements in sailing are even more significant when you think she comes from landlocked Birmingham!"
