New release - DVD launch Racist Incident

"A Racist Incident: What do I do now?" – DVD launch

Southampton Solent University hosted the launch of a new DVD produced specifically for Southampton entitled "A Racist Incident: What do I do now?" on Thursday May 8.

Produced by a local film company experienced in making films on issues of "race", the DVD aims to inform individuals and organisations what constitutes a racist incident and what steps can be taken to resolve it.

The project is funded by of Southampton Support Volunteer Project and Comic Relief, supported by Southampton City Council and promoted by a local, non-profit organisation Positive Message Limited.

Jayanti Shah, Head of Positive Message Limited and Chair of the Multi-Agency Group on Racial Harassment said:

"I am often asked what action can be taken to combat racism? This DVD is a simple guide to what individuals, either victims or witnesses to racist incidents, can do. Any incidents of racism need to be reported and challenged, including attitudes of colleagues within a work place"

Scripted, filmed and produced in Southampton, members of the community act out the real-life experiences of local victims of racism and harassment. As well as highlighting the issues it also provides advice on how to deal with different examples of racism in a variety of situations.

Don John, Southampton City Council's Race Development Officer said:

"In my many years as a Race Consultant I have found few resources that explain and explore this issue in a simple way. I am very happy to be associated with this DVD which de-mystifies an issue which many of us are not too sure about."

Copies of the DVD can be made available to local organisations and individuals on request from Positive Message Limited. For further information please contact Don John 023 8083 2274 or E-mail don.john@southampton.gov.uk|
