Honours for two Solent luminaries

Congratulations to two Solent luminaries who have been honoured in this year's Queen's Birthday Honours List.

Principal Lecturer in Computing, Professor Maggie Ross has been awarded an MBE for her services to higher education after being a leading light in the IT field for more than three decades.

During her 30-year career at SSU, Maggie has seen several changes in the industry, and she remains instrumental in outreach programmes to help computer users, both young and old, in Hampshire to learn more about the benefits and dangers of the Internet. In addition to her teaching, Maggie has been a major figure in the development and promotion of the British Computer Society in the region.

Maggie said: "I was so surprised when I heard about the MBE. I could not believe it and I am absolutely thrilled."

Ros Cassy – a University Governor since 2006 – has been honoured with an OBE for her services to the city.  Ros combines being a Governor with running a Business and Professional Development consultancy and Chairing the Southampton Partnership. Previously, Ros was Chief Executive of the Hampton Trust, Director of Southampton Community Health Services NHS Trust, and Director of Rose Road Association.

Ros said: "I am delighted. I think the award is a reflection of everyone's hard work who is involved in the city partnership and working towards our 2026 plan. It is a collaborative effort."
