Selfless students show they care
February 29 2008
Students from Southampton Solent University have been showing the community how much they care during Student Volunteering Week, February 25- March 2 2008.
Colourful art students showed elderly residents at Sunrise of Bassett residential care home that you are never too old to learn something new with a painting workshop. Later in the week residents at the home go to put on their dancing shoes and trip the light fantastic at a tea dance put on by students from both of the city's universities.
And it was a case of 'I'm cleaning in the rain' when hardy students got together to polish up the Polygon. The intrepid cohort didn't let a splash of rain dampen their spirits as they went about their 'Concrete Conservation' project, sponsored by Proctor and gamble.
Website whizzes took part in a national project Youth Proof. They used their talents to provide feedback and offer ideas on how to make charity websites more appealing to young people.
Style conscious students got in on the act raising over £100 with a multi-coloured Swap Shop. Fans of fashion had the opportunity to makeover their wardrobe with an Aladdin's cave of clothes, shoes, belts and scarves on offer.
Louise Drake, Southampton Solent University Employment Officer, Volunteering and Mentoring, was thrilled with how the week went: "We all have something to offer and our volunteers really enjoyed giving something back to community. We also signed up lots of new volunteers who will continue to offer their services throughout the year."
