SSU welcomes in the Chinese New Year

12 February 2008

As we approach the Beijing Games this summer interest in Chinese history, culture and contemporary life is increasing. To mark the Chinese New Year Southampton Solent University will be holding a celebration of Chinese culture on February 18 2008.

The celebrations at the Sir James Matthew Building will roar into action at 5.30pm with a Chinese lion dance, a traditional Chinese buffet and a cultural talk.

Why is the colour red so predominant during the celebrations? Why are the dragon and lion dances performed? Speaker Rachel Gao, Vice-President of the Chinese Scholar and Student Association and a teacher in Chinese painting will give an insight into the Chinese New Year traditions.

All are welcome to this free event at the Sir James Matthew Building, Above Bar, Southampton. You can book a place by emailing events@solent.ac.uk|| or calling event co-ordinator Hazel Whitehead on 02380 319 038.
