News release - Big, burly and bookish
October 22 2008
Huge help was at hand for pupils of Springhill Catholic School recently, when Southampton's American footballers joined the class as part of its reading week.
The Southampton Stags American Football team – made up of players from both the city's universities - signed up for reading duties after delighting children at the school's summer fete earlier in the year.
The team – the 2008 British Universities American Football League champions - joined a host of sports personalities visiting the school to emphasise the importance of reading.
The Stags players – studying degrees ranging from electronic engineering and philosophy to PR and film studies - read from selected books to Year One children, before talking about their on-pitch roles.
The Stags' Feargus Kehoe said:
"After overcoming their initial shock and awe at the size of the players, the children soon got around to enjoying the books and asking questions."
