Top awards for talented Southampton design students,
presented by former winner
Two talented young designers have won prestigious awards and prizes in the White Total Design Achievement in Design Awards 2008, an annual scheme organised by top Hampshire agency White Total Design in association with Southampton Solent University's School of Design.
Dan Osman, a final-year degree student in Graphic Design, was the winner of the 'print based' award and Luke Till, who's just completed his Graphic Image Making degree, was named winner in the 'screen based' category.
Proof that the award scheme has real value, the WTD judging team included designer Ben Smith, a former Solent University student, who won this award four years ago and is now part of the WTD team. He is now working on major brands such as Calpol and Benylin and for blue-chip organisations including Le Boat (part of TUI) and the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF).
Southampton-based Dan produced a book 'Naming the Dead' which focused on the soldiers who have lost their lives in Iraq. Fellow winner, Luke, from Portsmouth, produced a screen-based project focusing on popular culture, in which he designed a programme identity for Channel4.
Dan and Luke each won a design materials/computer equipment voucher and a two week work placement at the WTD studio.
WTD's Ben Smith said:
"Judging the students' work is one of the highlights of the year for us, and it's great to see the fresh ideas coming through from the potential designers of tomorrow. We were impressed by the quality of creative thinking that the two winners showed, and we hope that their work experience with us will be as helpful to them as it was for me."
Senior Lecturer for the BA (Hons) Graphic Image Making course at Southampton Solent University, Peter Jarvis, said:
"We are delighted that White Total Design continues to support this award scheme which gives our students a great opportunity to show off their talent and enthusiasm, and enables the winners to meet and work alongside a top design agency."
