Windrush... and beyond

October 7 2008

In celebration of Black History Month Solent will be hosting The Windrush... and Beyond exhibition in the concourse gallery, Michael Andrews Building from October 13-24.

The nostalgic exhibition of classic African and Caribbean photographs marks the 60th anniversary of the arrival of the Empire Windrush - an old troop-carrying steamship that arrived at Tilbury Docks, London on 22nd June 1948 carrying 490 Caribbean men and women.

The series of post-war photographic images - reflecting the richness of Southampton's African/Caribbean culture - were chosen from the city's archives by a group of young people who were asked to select the most evocative pictures and give them a one word title that best summed them up.

Don John, Southampton City Council's Development Officer says, "This exhibition is an excellent vehicle to retell the story of the brave and courageous individuals who left everything behind to start a new life half way across the world - facing many hardships and making significant contributions to the life, wealth and culture of this country."

The University's Vice-Chancellor, Professor Van Gore - who will officially open the photographic exhibition on Monday October 13 from 6-8pm - says,  "We are committed to raising awareness of Black History Month as part of a wider process of celebration, education and social justice. This engaging and emotionally moving exhibition is a great opportunity for students, staff and visitors to learn about The Windrush, not simply as historical event but also as powerful symbol for post-war Britain and beyond."
