News release - £7.8m cash boost for students

  Southampton Solent University has received a £7.8 million cash boost from the UK's higher education funding body, HEFCE, to accelerate its current development as a distinctive new university for the 21st century.

The funding – from a one-off national pot – will support Solent's plans to offer an enhanced and more flexible experience for its students and to better serve employers in Southampton and the region.

The funding is earmarked for a range of specific initiatives, which will include:

  • Greater flexibility in course content and delivery
  • Closer collaboration with employers
  • Closer collaboration with further education colleges
  •  

Southampton Solent University Vice Chancellor Van Gore said: "We are delighted that HEFCE supports our strategic vision. It is an imaginative yet realistic approach which will confirm us as a truly distinctive provider of higher education. The funding will help us to play an even greater role in the social and economic well-being of Southampton and the region."

Steve Egan, Deputy Chief Executive of HEFCE, said: "This award, from HEFCE's Strategic Development Fund, provides substantial support for Southampton Solent's future strategic plans. We look forward to seeing the developments which this investment will support as the University seeks to play a significant role in supporting the regional economy and provide a more flexible learning experience for students."
