Glastonbury 2009

June 24 2009

More than 30 Southampton Solent University students are honing their craft at Glastonbury this year as they knuckle down for one of the world’s best work placements.

Glasto in the rainSolent – the UK’s only university with a work placement at Glastonbury - has once again sent its skilled team to test its training to the limit, using the University’s cutting-edge equipment to perform vital film and production jobs for the festival.

Broadcast journalism, TV Production, Film and TV Studies, Media Technology and Events Management students and staff are taking Solent’s Outside Broadcast truck – along with sunscreen, wellies and waterproofs - to produce a series of short films commissioned by the festival’s Glastonbury TV.

The students are using the University’s High Definition multi-camera rig, recording equipment and digital network to film and edit commissioned documentaries about eco issues and the setting up of Glastonbury - as well as live camera coverage of the UK’s top music acts.

Solent senior technician Dave Poulton started the work experience in 2004, after years of taking a small group with him to run a voluntary food kitchen on Michael Eavis’s site.

Since then, Solent students have learnt their trade while mixing with the world’s biggest performers in roles ranging from film production and radio reporting, to backstage management and filming live acts for outside screens.

Senior Film and TV Studies Lecturer, Tony Steyger said: “It’s a fantastic experience for our students who will have to work hard and think on their feet.”
