Legendary drummer is Fellow

Friday November 27 2009

World famous drummer, Carl Palmer, from supergroup Emerson, Lake and Palmer, gave students a drumming masterclass when he visited Southampton Solent University to receive a Visiting Fellowship, and give a guest lecture.

Dean of the Faculty of Media, Arts and Society, Rod Pilling, said the University was honoured to present the Visiting Fellowship to Carl, and delighted that the staff and students would benefit from the input of such a successful musician.

Carl is an icon to millions of fans across the world, who have followed his successes for 40 years. He first found fame with The Crazy World of Arthur Brown in the 1960s, before his success with rock prog band Emerson, Lake and Palmer, and then Asia.

Students and staff alike packed the University’s performance theatre, where Carl talked in depth about the plusses and pitfalls in today’s industry.

The highlight of the event was Carl’s deft drumming display on a hi-hat cymbal which demonstrated the kind of talent that has made him legendary. He told students this kind of passion, with sheer hard work, talent and a good sense of the business, would help them achieve their ambitions in the industry.

He said: “If you have real drive you should come to a place like Solent. The music industry is a hard business but it didn’t put me off. I worked hard and I was passionate and it was worth it. If you enter the business of music and creativity you want to be in it all your life.”
