RYA Awards

Solent University lecturer, Dr Robin Loscombe, was presented with one of the Royal Yacht Association’s (RYA) most prestigious awards by HRH the Princess Royal, President of the RYA, at a recent awards ceremony.
Dr Robin Loscombe, Senior Lecturer in Maritime and Coastal Studies, was presented with an RYA Outstanding Contribution Award at the RYA’s annual awards ceremony, held in London on Thursday (19 November).
Robin - the lead lecturer in small craft structures at Southampton Solent University -has given technical support to the RYA since 1998. He joined the International Organisation for Standardisation’s (ISO) Technical Committee in 2001 and has attended meetings worldwide to encourage the development of international standards for small craft structures.
“It was a great honour to receive recognition for my work in the industry and a truly memorable day”, said Robin. “The University actively encourages its staff to work closely with industry, encouraging maximum currency for the courses and its research and enterprise agenda.”
Ken Kershaw of the RYA’s Technical Department said: “Robin’s outstanding personal contribution to our sport and leisure over many years, although known to few, will have a long lasting and fundamental bearing on the safety of many.”
Rod Carr, RYA Chief Executive, added: “The RYA is delighted to make this award in recognition of Robin’s enthusiasm and promotion of our sport and many years’ contribution to the sailing scene in the south.”
A total of 49 voluntary awards were presented to winners from across the UK. The award winners enjoyed a celebratory lunch in the presence of HRH the Princess Royal, and were presented with a commemorative medallion and certificate.
