Today, Southampton Solent University and Southampton City College announced they are exploring the potential for a closer working relationship.
Southampton Solent University Vice-Chancellor, Professor Van Gore, said: "This collaborative relationship will build on the strengths, values and traditions of both institutions, whilst respecting the integrity and character of each.
"Through the development of a common vision and strategy, the college and university are seeking to create greater educational opportunities to better serve the needs of Southampton and the wider region."
It is envisaged the collaboration between the two institutions will enhance opportunities for the region's learners, enabling wider participation in further and higher education and addressing persistent pockets of educational underachievement within the city.
Local employers from both the public and private sector should also benefit, with an increased ability to target worklessness, employability and the skills agenda.
Southampton City College Principal and Chief Executive, Lindsey Noble said: "City College's reputation is growing all the time. The College, with City Training, has high success rates, good student recruitment and campus redevelopment underway.
"We are very pleased to be starting talks with the University about how we can jointly work together to increase the opportunities for young people and adults. Both organisations are committed to supporting the city of Southampton achieve its long term objectives for a skilled workforce as part of the 2026 vision".
