News release - SU take to the stage at Glade Festival 2009
March 29 2009
Southampton Solent University is to be the first university in the UK to run its own stage at the country's top open-air electronic music festival.
Students at Solent University are to produce and perform on their own stage at this year's Glade Festival, thanks to an exciting new partnership.
The stage – which will be entirely produced by the students - will showcase the wide range of musical talent enrolled on the university's music courses. Alongside named acts, student bands, DJs and performance artists will play their first festival.
"We've been working hard at increasing the diversity of music at Glade Festival, introducing a lot of big world music acts, a new Circus and Cabaret tent with live Ska and Latin vibes, and the Solent tent is a natural part of this evolution", said Nick Ladd, Glade Festival Director.
As well as shining the spotlight on our musical talent, this year's Glade Festival will see students from a wide range of courses working at the event – including photographers, film crew, journalists, music promoters and event organisers.
Southampton Solent University's Dr Martin James, Senior Lecturer in Popular Music said:
"Solent Uni's partnership agreement with Glade Festival is an extremely exciting development that will enable students from a wide range of disciplines to experience what it's like to work at a high profile, internationally acclaimed music festival. The Solent stage will provide the perfect platform for students to show off their talents and skills in a highly charged and demanding environment."
Glade Festival - winner of best dance festival 2008 at the UK Festival Awards - will take place from 16-19 July at new venue the Matterly Bowl, Winchester where it can enjoy the highest late night sound levels of any UK Festival.
There will be seven dance tents, two outdoor stages, interstellar circus and cabaret, installation art, surreal situation comedy and much more.
'Underworld' - this years headliners – will be joined by the cream of every conceivable genre of electronic music including 'Booka Shade', 'Squarepusher', 'Digital Mystikz', 'Rusko', 'Benga' and 'Femi Kuti and the Positive Force'.
More exciting news for students is Glade Festival's £100 student ticket offer, making it as affordable as possible for cash strapped students. The student offer expires on 8th May and students will need to show ID when collecting their tickets at the festival or pay the £26 difference of a full price ticket.
