One hundred and thirteen Navigation, Marine Engineer and Electro-Technical Officer Cadets from the University’s Warsash Maritime Academy celebrated their graduation to fully qualified officers at their summer passing out ceremony in Southampton Guildhall at the weekend.

This year’s ceremony included the first group of UK cadets to complete a Foundation Degree-based cadetship.

The newly qualified officers will be embarking on their chosen careers in worldwide shipping, working with some of the most prestigious employers in the cruise, cargo, container, oil and gas sectors.

Top employers Anglo Eastern Group, BP Shipping, Carnival UK, Celtic Pacific (UK) Ltd, Clipper Marine Services Ltd, Clyde Marine Training, Foreland Shipping (Guernsey Ltd), Hapag-Lloyd, Royal Fleet Auxiliary, Shell Ship Management, Ship Safe Training Group, and Viking Recruitment were represented at the ceremony.

The University’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Van Gore, said: “The passing out ceremony is the culmination of three year's hard work and I salute all our cadets who are graduating today.”

John Millican, Dean of the Academy said: “We are extremely proud of our cadets’ achievements and are happy to launch such capable and confident young officers into the international shipping industry.”

The passing out ceremony rounded off another successful year for the Academy. Earlier in the year, plans were announced to move the acclaimed manned model training facility – based in Marchwood for the last 20 years - to Timsbury, as part of a £1.5 million investment plan to keep it at the cutting edge of maritime training, and 300 new cadets will be joining up during the next academic year starting in September.
