BUCS Yachting Champions
Wednesday April 21 2010
For the past decade, Southampton Solent University sailors have dominated the BUCS (British Universities & Colleges Sport) competition – and this year is no different.
Guy Jackson and crew, and 2009 reigning champion Chris Witty and crew took 1 st and 2 nd places respectively to secure the BUCS Yachting Championship for the fifth year in a row.
Solent’s sailors were among 36 university teams from across the country and Ireland competing against each other at Port Solent over four days of tough yacht racing in the Solent.
With all three Solent crews finishing in the top ten, the University has firmly established its position as the premier yachting institution in the yachting sector.
Matt Bishop, Southampton Solent University’s Sports Development Manager said:
"Solent University has dominated this national event, having won nine times in the last ten years. Our success and reputation for yachting is second to none.
“We are recruiting quality sailors year on year and the support they receive from the University’s STAND scheme for elite athletes is helping them to compete at top level whilst still applying themselves to their academic studies.”
The winning Solent team will go on to represent England at the World Student Yachting Championship in France this summer.
Matt said: “Preparations have already started for this event and we have firmly set our sights on achieving a podium finish. Our ultimate aim is to repeat our World Championship winning performance of 2004.”
He added: “The Royal Southern Yacht Club has been really supportive and helped fund our entry for a third team this year."
