3 November 2010
Dr John Latham has been honoured by Southampton Solent University in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the University.
The respected academic received an honorary degree of Doctor of the University during a ceremony at Southampton’s Guildhall on Tuesday 2 November.
Dr Latham enjoyed a long and distinguished career working in higher education – reaching Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Southampton Solent University before retiring in 2009.
A BSc and PhD, both in mathematics, from the University of Nottingham prompted the beginning of a successful and accomplished teaching career.
Dr Latham held posts at Bournemouth University, the Open University and Surrey University before joining Southampton Institute during the early 1990s.
His full-time degree course set the standard for expansion in similar awards across the institute in a wide range of subjects. And he later became Dean of Southampton Business School – the sixth largest of its kind in the country.
With an enviable reputation in the field of tourism management, Dr Latham held the title of Professor of Business Analysis and specialised in tourism economics.
Dr Latham’s research and findings have been widely published and organisations across the globe have also benefited from his expertise as a consultant.
On receiving his award Dr Latham thanked the University and said, “I think I have the award for being one of those fortunate people have done and been paid for doing what they loved.”
He told the assembled gradates, “Over your time as a student here you learned in a variety of ways and were subject to many different forms of assessment. Standards here are high in keeping with those of other British universities and that makes your award and my award worth having.”
More than 2000 students are graduating with degrees and professional qualifications during 10 ceremonies at Southampton Guildhall from 1-5 November.
